Island County commissioners are looking to further limit the number of days fireworks are allowed in the unincorporated areas.
A public hearing has been set to consider an ordinance which, under its current draft, would limit the use of fireworks to only July 3-5 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1. Under the current county laws, fireworks may be used June 28-July 5 and Dec. 31-Jan. 1.
The ordinance would also authorize the sheriff, who acts as the fire marshal, to temporarily ban the discharge fireworks completely in severe dry weather conditions. Commissioners considered a complete ban of fireworks last year but the measure didn’t pass.
The public hearing is set for 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, in the commissioners meeting room in Coupeville.
