Mara Powers is Miss Oak Harbor 2016.
Powers was selected Saturday at the second annual Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant, held at Oak Harbor High School.
There were 18 contestants in this year’s competition, which was broken up into two divisions: Miss Oak Harbor, made up of juniors and seniors; and Teen Miss Oak Harbor, made up of freshmen and sophomores. Scholarships totaling $8,800 were awarded, exceeding organizer’s expectations.
Pageant organizer and founder Jes Walker-Wyse told Whidbey Daily News during the application process that the six weeks of preparation leading up to the final pageant offers young women a unique opportunity.
“There is a great element of camaraderie when these young ladies get together,” she said. “It’s great for their self-development, confidence and life experience. Plus, there’s a fun beauty element, which makes this a unique scholarship opportunity.”
Completing Miss Oak Harbor’s court this year are 1st Princess Resego Mooki and 2nd Princess Breanna Grehan.
