Naval Air Station Whidbey Island has officially received its award for being named the U.S. Navy’s number one large naval installation.
In a presentation Wednesday morning, Jan. 20, NAS Whidbey commanding officer, Capt. Mike Nortier, shown at center, right, was awarded a commemorative check by Rear Adm. Jeffery Ruth, Commander, Navy Region Northwest, with several members of “Team Whidbey” in attendance.
The money, totaling $224,000, will be used to improve quality of life projects for sailors and their families. Exact projects will be determined at a later late.
NAS Whidbey is now in competition for the Commander in Chief Installation Excellence award, which will be chosen from among the top Navy, Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Defense Logistics installations.
